Thousands of people rallied in Ahvaz, south-west Iran, on Thursday 23 February protesting the presence of Iranian regime’s President, Hassan Rouhani.

The protesters demanded a halt to all projects that are rerouting river waters in this province to other areas as well dam constructions, and drying up lagoons. The demonstrators also called for action to resolve continuous water and power outages and a viable plan to deal with the air contamination disaster in that region.

Security forces had blocked all roads leading to the protest site and downtown Ahvaz in an effort to prevent protesters from joining ranks. Various protesters were seen wearing masks as an expression of protest to Rouhani’s inaction.

When police and security forces sought to infiltrate the protesters’ lines the people recognised them and introduced the plainclothes agents to each other.

Khuzestan Province has suffered from dust storms from 2001 and experts blame the government officials for negligence and incompetence for dealing with environmental issues. Wrong projects and abuse of water resources in the province are the main cause for dried up ponds and wetlands.
