While it has endeared itself in the hearts of many Muslims around the world as the Muslim country with a backbone, Iran is failing in the battle of hearts and minds in its own backyard. From its mistreatment of Afghan refugees to blocking the supply of much-needed fuel in the dead of the unforgiving Afghan winter, it is angering Afghans of all stripes.

In the International Conference on the situation of human rights in Iran and in Camp Ashraf in Brussels last Tuesday (January 25, 1011) Ms. Irene khan, former Secretary General of Amnesty International, raised concern over the human rights situation in Iran and threats posed to the residents of Camp Ashraf in Iraq in her speech at an international conference in Brussels on January 25 and said: Let's not instrumentalise the human rights of the people of Iran, they have a right to their freedom, they have a right to struggle for their freedom, they have a right to enjoy their freedom and we have an obligation to support them in their struggle for rights and that is what Ashraf is all about.

Mr. Struan Stevenson, Scottish Conservative MEP and President of European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Iraq, told an international conference in Brussels on January 25 "We must stop this ludicrous game of ‘hide and seek’, abandon the failed policy of appeasement and confront the mullahs before they gain hegemony in the Middle East”.
